Earthquake in Spain

In May 11th 2011, the city of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) in the South-eastern part of Spain, registered two earthquakes. The first one, which magnitude was 4.4 stroke at 17:05 (local time). The second one, stronger, with a magnitude of 5.2, stroke at 18:47. Despite of their quite moderate magnitude, Lorca suffered severe damages and there were at least nine people dead. Indeed, the second tremor toppled several buildings after striking at a depth of just 1km. The quake appears to be the most serious to hit Spain in about 50 years. Hundreds of earthquakes hit the country every year but most of them are too small to be noticed. Murcia, which is close to the large fault line beneath the Mediterranean Sea, is the Spain's most seismically active area and suffered tremors in 2005 and 1999.
