On the 1st and 2nd of October 2011 heavy downpours hit the area of El Bayadh, 700 km SW of Algiers, leading to deadly flooding within the town of El Bayadh. The flooding has badly affected the population and property: 13 dead, tens of injured, hundreds of destroyed houses, 5 collapsed bridges… at an estimated cost of 6 billion dinars (600 million euros) not counting housing. An emergency shelter has been set up for the flood affected population within an unused factory.
